Uses and Limitations of Risk Assessment Essay

Toxicity assessment

This is done to determine the level at which a contaminant can cause a particular effect on receptors. There are adverse effects that are caused by the increased level of toxicity in the environment. For instance, the number of mission or chemical additive in most of  the products on the market today, need to texted with  comprehensive study on the toxicity assessment done to determine the effects of this drug on the individual. By so doing, there is a likelihood of reduced levels of health hazards and mutations that are resulting from contamination by some hazardous chemicals. Through this study for instance, there have been reduced effects of the most commonly used drugs during pregnancy. The study of teratogenicity has proved that some substances were taken into particular concentrations, can lead to unpleasantbody growth or develop at milestones of the individual. Thus sit very important to take caution in case of any synthetic taking of drugs or food. In addition, in most cases, the level of toxicity is not measured in human beings, but in animals and plants before it gets worse for animals and eventually human being beings. Sometimes it can be so dangerous, posing a problem to both the human beings and the community at large (Funke, 1995). If not well controlled, this kind of toxicity will definitely lead to more detrimental consequences to both human health directly and indirectly. This has been achieved over time in most instances there are timely changes in the economic systems. This timely and swift action, can save a situation and even an outbreak in an area. This risk assessment is not all the time, so explicit, however, it faces a number of limitations that do not get it to reach its optimal potential. Therefore, it is important for one to fully understand the probable issues in the process so that they can be prevented from occurring. One of the major issues is the availability of funds. This process needs a lot of funds to run successfully, at the same time, needs a lot more time in order for it to be completed. Thus, in order for the findings to be of use to the community at large, timeliness is a factor that cannot be avoided. Overtime people should ensure that they strategize on how to identify a threat and then on how to approach (SERVEISS, 2002). That in place, toxicology assessment will definitely be of help to the community at large since it will help curb a situation before it happens.

Exposure assessment

Exposure is the contact between an agent and the target.  Most of the time it is assessed by including the period of exposure and not only the agent exposed to. This is important because, the eventual effect of the agent on the target body, also depends on the time in which on was exposed to the agent. For instance, same corrosive chemicals, affects one more as they are more in contact with the individual. Thus this factor and not be overlooked (Renn, 2008).  In addition, contact between an agent and target occurs through a number of routes. It is important to note the route of contamination since this is likely to affects different organs in different capacities. These exposure and at times occurs either through multiple routes or one route at a time. Multiple routes lead to increasedeffect on the individual. For instance chlorinated water can either be ingested or can get to the target through the skin. Sufficing to note is the fact that there are much more effects on the target. In case they ingested the contaminated water unlike when they came into contact with it.  Thus this cannot be over looked, but be attended to adequately so as to achieve optimal effects of the intended management and prevention of a catastrophic outbreak. To determine the amount of agents inhaled or contaminating individuals, there are various methods that can be used to determine the amount of effects that has been felt among people. First there should be measurement of the concentration at the source all the way to the host that has been affected. By so doing, one is able to know the exact amount of contaminant that reached the host and help in planning on the modalities of elimination.

The measurement of the level of concentration of a contaminant can be achieved by doing a sample taken at the source, on either air or water that is close to the individual. This is so because some of the concentration measures cannot be found in blood. Sometimes the contaminant might be absorbed already hence tampering with results in case one relied on the blood samples. This kind of assessment if useful to the community since it prevents further development of contaminants. Once the expose is identified, modalities to mitigate the chances of it affecting people are minimal. Thus it is healthy to keep watch of all environmental contaminates for swift and timely action (Funke, 1995). This will save lives in a number of instances and at the same time foster a healthy growing among individuals.  In addition, there are a number of plants that are also affected by exposure t this chemicals, thus it is important to note that this chemicals can be deterred from reaching this plants by eliminating  the source and cutting short the exposure. If plants are affected, most animals in the food chain will be affected thus may reach human beings eventually. Moreover, it may affect the health of those animas. Thus it is the responsibility of the environmental professionals to keep all that at bay.

Ecological Risk Assessment

This is the study of the effect of a contaminant on the environment and its effects on the environment. The risk is assessing by determining the consequences of it happening the likelihood of them happening. The higher the two, then the risk is rated much higher than usual leaving behind concrete data that can be used to make viable decisions that are likely to impact lives of people and prevent an outbreak of a disease from occurring (Renn, 2008). The process is made up of a number of steps that have to adhere to in order or one to come up with the best outcomes. to start with is the  identification of the problem, this will include determining the stressors, the time frame, the pathway and time frame through which it operates overtime after that information has been collected, then there is need to analyze the problem adequately.  These points to the extent at which it is likely to occur at the same time assess the effects of the chemical and its concentrations too in addition to the distributing of the chemicals through the area. Then after that, there should be risk characterization, which involves comparing the risk with comparison effects.  The next step will include management of the risk and reduction of its effects.

Conclusion

Lastly, is the monitoring of the process so that one can mitigate the effects overtime. This is important for the fact in case the process is not well monitored, one step might go amiss and affect the whole process. Therefore, there should be keen time management and step by step management to ensure optimal results are obtained. Timely management of each and every risk is key in realizing the full effects of the decision making to mitigate a number of risks. Thus, it is important that there is continuous and timely management of the processes so that optimal results are achieved and optimal health at the same time.
