What are the All Saints’ Day Traditions?

All Saints' Day is a day of paying respect to all the saints of the Catholic Church. This day is celebrated on November 1. On this day, people who passed away long ago are remembered. However, this day should not be confused with All Souls Day, which is celebrated on November 2 and which is the day when recently deceased people are recalled.

Why and How It Is Celebrated

All Saints' Day is quite a serious day, as long as every Catholic Christian must attend the service in church, unless he/she does not have a serious reason, such as illness, not to go to the mass. Different countries have a variety of diverse traditions and rules of their adherence, but the essence of All Saint’s Day is the same all over the world. Catholic Church pays tribute to all recognized and unrecognized saints, who entered the Heaven.

Customs and traditions differ from country to country, but the holiday still has the same spirit. American-style Halloween costume fun is still associated with a specific spiritual atmosphere, which is why it is okay to celebrate All Saints’ Day in such a way. At the same time, Catholic Christians often opt for quiet and spiritual ways of celebrating the day. In Europe, at All Saints’ Day, people visit the graves of the deceased relatives, repair and clean them, leaving some flower petals and lit candles.

What Kind of Celebration Is The Most Appropriate?

Catholics would tend to say that secular Halloween-fun celebration is not adequate, because All Saints’ Day is a religious holiday first, and they are right. Still, there are no limitations and restrictions; having fun is also acceptable, as you may show how you enjoy your life and thereby make your ancestors feel proud. This is the day of remembering the deceased ones, but why shouldn’t it be celebrated with enjoying the life?
