Tables for Ladies Sample

To any analysis there seems to have many pieces of art work but narrowing down makes an impressive work to a piece of artwork called Tables for Ladies. The artist behind this amazing piece of artwork is called Edward Hopper who did it in 1930s. The paintings being used is an oil painting that is, oil on canvas with a complete and rectangular shape dimension of 122 × 153 cm. to my own findings, I think that this piece of work is art as expression. The artist was attempting to display dredges of life, loneliness, isolation and lack of variety. This is depicted when the waitress takes orders fro people and she barely has any time to speak to them. Person on the foreground is faintly shown his face but those in the background are very sad and gloomy. These shows that people in that restaurant have a lot of expression. The expression can help you figure out the meaning behind the paintings. In the scene, people are at a restaurant, some of the people are eating and others working. The one working is a waitress who is at work serving dinner. It is summer, spring period. This is shown as people are wearing short sleeves.

Hopper belongs to the art movement known as regionalism or rather realistic traditions. As you can see in his paintings, he has designed the art to focus on the many things that the realist traditionalist (the traditionalists) thought of. This has made his art work look more or less realistic. I may consider that he lived in the New York, where he may have longed for a more isolated lives or he may be rather arguing that the isolated lives are not conversant to the real way of life. From this perspective, these places (the lonely and deserted places) have influenced his art work. If you consider how few people are in his painting, it shows the reality of loneliness. This shows the daily life of people in the 1030s when the work was being done. The desertness of the restaurant through appearance of few patrons brings all the factor of loneliness to the limelight. Also in his paintings Edward Hoppers used the rules of perspective drawing. This style is drawn in two perspectives for example the orange goes to one point while the tables go to another. The objectives as depicted in the painting get less detailed as the go towards the varnishing points. This is shown where he paints faintness in the face of the person in the foreground but the one in the background is showed clearly as very sad and gloomy. This generally meant that all lives go to varnishing points/up and down/sideways.

With all these mood swings in the expressions depicted by how people in this painting are, one can make a conclusion on how people struggle for survival. In my opinion, Hoppers was trying to show how drean and boring life can be at times. During the time specified that is when the painting was done, life used not to be fine to so many. The waitress for instance in the painting does not have an interesting life, but has an accumulation of issues as days goes by. She is isolated as she does not even talk to the people he is serving, this shows how desperate she is to look for anyone to help her. In my opinion, the waitress represented the women in the time period the painting was being done, who had many things going on in their lives. These things are not visible as good or bad but they tend to make one to get thinking, though they look composed. They tend to live a normal life as possible. This makes them be accepted in one way or the other. In the background, there seem to be men eating dinner. Those who afforded dinner are the rich and wealthy business men probably. They always meet there to make important decisions each day. With them being gloomy and sad, it showed that still issues passed within their minds never minding they are rich and wealthy. Most definitely the entire picture is designed to show women misery (as seen with the waitress) and contrast between the interesting person (depicted by business people) and boring persons (waitress and counter person not talking to the people they are serving). The society at large is represented by the tables at the restaurant.

The artist, Hoppers Edward, succeeded on what he was trying to accomplish. This is through his involvement in using specific emotions and expressions. The emotion is shown on the mood of the painting which he used dark and light, while the expressions is seen on people’s faces. They appear sad and gloomy. Yet, Hopper could have put more people in painting to take the meaning more clear.

Conclusion

An Edward Hoppers Table for Ladies has inspired many people. This painting will continue to do so for a very long time.
