My Favorite Life Tips from Mark Twain

When you hear the name Mark Twain, the first thought that comes to mind might be the names of his well-known books The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn but there are Mark Twain’s quotes about life of no less popularity. I’d like to share some awesome life tips from Mark Twain, the ones that are definitely my favorite ones.

  • “A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.”

I do like this tip because you know that we need to stop bothering about the way the other people think of us right now. Have you ever wondered how disastrous your attempts to get the approval from the others are? Stop looking for the approval from the others, instead allow yourself to be the person you want to be and let yourself to be comfortable with yourself. Look for the approval from yourself, that’s what you really need. No one says it’s easy to do. Surely, it takes some time, but you are the one who is in charge of your inner peace and comfort. So why don’t you get off your butt and get rid of that devastating barrier that is called the approval from others? Give up pleasing other people compromising and sacrificing your own interests because it’s a disservice, nothing more. Don’t let anyone tell you what you deserve or not, follow your heart and dreams, and, for God’s sake, please, stop being shy of who you are and the way you feel about something, no matter what is it. They might never understand your goals, your beliefs, and things you do enjoy in life, it’s okay. We, human beings, are different, and we really differ. You are definitely worth your personal comfort and freedom, and that’s the very first reason why you need your own approval. No one else’s but yours. Mind to praise and appreciate yourself; be nice to yourself because you are a big boss here, don’t forget that!

  • "Your limitations may just be in your mind. If you believe that you know what people think of you, I will disappoint you. You never know."

We tend to limit ourselves in any aspect of our lives just because we mistakenly think that we know how the others treat us. How often are you afraid of someone’s disapproval because of your age or beliefs? You can only imagine what the others may think, but believe me, you never know for sure. If people stop interpreting everything that someone has said or done to them in their own way, how many conflicts and misunderstandings could be avoided! Maybe it’s not the best example ever but imagine. We have a garden at the backyard, you and your neighbor have to water the plants, but you don’t communicate with each other, and only guess whose turn to water the plants is today. Plants are dying there with no water because both of you has no idea whose turn to water the plants is, or because of the full lack of communication or each of you mistakenly thinks that another one has already done that. Why shouldn’t you just come to your neighbor and ask?

  • “Humor is mankind’s greatest blessing.”

This one is right on the money. In any stressful and ridiculous moments of your life, no matter what happens, save some time and space for humor and hearty laugh. These two are amazing tools in any doubtful situations, a true blessing for good and bad times as well. The whole world seems to be against you? Was your boss angry as the devil?
Keep in mind that a smile goes a lot further than a kick.

  • “Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.”

The earlier you realize that being angry at someone you are just badly hurting yourself, the better it will be. You should let go of anger as quickly as it’s possible. By the way, the person you are angry at isn’t even aware of your uncomfortable feeling, which I’d rather call a feeling that is killing you. Anger steals your joy and energy; it’s like a match starting the fire. Make sure you blow out the match each time it has been lit. You don’t want to do harm to yourself, don’t you? Instead of calling a fire brigade, be responsible and determined enough to talk to the person you are being angry with and resolve the conflict. You do want to live your life in a pleasurable way, don’t you? So why you shouldn’t say STOP each time your “inner match” has been lit?

  • “The world owes you nothing. It was here first.”

The most stupid thing ever is to be deeply concerned that someone owes you something. The earlier you release yourself from entitlement, the better you will feel about the world and your life in every single aspect. Since your childhood, you might have that sort of entitlement as your parents gave you many things. But the truth is, you are not a child anymore, and no one will buy you the toy you pick with your finger. It’s you who is choosing, and buying a toy, do you feel that difference? If you are still standing and waiting for someone to buy that desirable toy for you, poor thing you need some help immediately. Be brave enough to take responsibility for your “toy,” and please stop blaming the unfair world for every single failure of your own!

  • “If you’re taking a different path, prepare for reactions.”

Amazing fact for sure but seeing something from another perspective, the one that differs from the others leads to various reactions from people. These reactions may vary, but with no difference are they discouraging or cheerful ones, you need to be ready for them. When you think or do something different, be ready for different reactions as some people may be indifferent, some may be happy for you, and someone may completely discouraging. One thing for you to remember in this case, the way they feel about themselves is shown in the judgments they make and the words they say. And it’s totally okay. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a fairy tale, but talking about fairy tales, there are always the good and the bad heroes, just in case you forgot about that! Despite all of that you shouldn’t be too negative, as the others might not react as negatively as you’ve expected.

  • “Drag your thoughts away from your troubles… by the ears, by the heels, or any other way you can manage it.”

Keep your focus on something you do want, something extremely good and positive. Don’t let any failure or trouble spoil your days and ruin your joy. No matter what, stay focused on the things that matter the most. Face every trouble or mistake as a challenge and lesson, not as a curse. It’s life and everything happens. In any unexpected failure, get concentrated on something good and stay positive no matter what. Do your best to focus your mind on positivity as only this way you can manage everything. Positivity is a choice, be wise to make it real. Your focus can and must be controlled. Remember where you put your focus and energy that you will get later. Stop dwelling on your problems, refocus your mind on the useful things not a waste of time!
