Losing and Maintaining Weight in College

When you start college, it is a completely new page of your life. Since your lifestyle changes, you might face the problem of gaining extra weight due to unlimited meal plans, going out to eat, and the late night studying. Luckily, there are ways of avoiding gaining weight and maintaining it. Here are some of the most effective tips that are a must-do for anyone who fights extra pounds.

Step 1: Choose healthy food

It is essential to follow a healthy diet in order to be healthier. Typically, every college provides its students with a wide range of meals to choose from. It is a good idea to check out the salad bar occasionally instead of automatically taking the main meal every day. You should also limit yourself to eating desserts. Ice cream also counts since it is full of carbohydrates. Make a habit of indulging yourself in your favorite dessert every two or three days. This way, you will be satisfied, and you won’t gain extra pounds.

Step 2: Drink lots of water

Despite an extensive range of drinks, it is recommended to limit yourself on the number of sweet fizzy beverages you drink weekly. If you don’t want to gain weight, the best option for you is water. Try drinking at least six cups of water every day.

Take a bottle of water with you every time you have classes or extracurricular activities. Once you start drinking this amount of water regularly, up it to an extra cup a day. Believe it or not, drinking water is absolutely beneficial for your digestive system. Besides, drinking more water helps you to alleviate hunger. When you feel full, it causes you to eat less, doesn’t it? Therefore, water is your best friend in the fight against gaining weight.

Step 3: Keep healthy snacks in your room

Forget about chips, candies, and other junk foods if you truly want to maintain your weight. Instead of eating these tempting foods, try swapping them for granola bars, peanut butter crackers, or grapes. Moreover, keeping only healthy snacks won’t distract you from gaining your goal in sustaining a healthy diet.

Step 4: Limit late night snacking

Snacking doesn’t seem harmful at first sight. However, it might be the main reason of gaining weight during your freshman year. Thus, you need to reduce the number of snacks, especially during late night. Healthy foods can be a substitution though.

Step 5: Join the gym

The majority of colleges have some type of gym for students, where they can work out. If you are lucky to have the gym to train, you should definitely take this advantage. If you want to see some results, it is recommended to hit the gym at least twice a week. Make sure you don’t skip your workouts since you won’t gain your goal in losing and maintaining your weight.
