How To Keep Your Faith In College
College is a great new experience – you face new challenges, learn new information, make new friends, learn time management and open yourself up for a great number of previously unknown, wonderful activities. However, it took me some time to realize that these things are not the number one priority. I quickly understood that in such a setting it is very challenging to keep your faith, because I had to stand up for what I believe in even in situations when I had little or no support at all. Very soon it became clear to me that the task of keeping faith in college is a difficult one, because being a Christian is not a widespread thing in modern day colleges.
This is why it is very important to have a close, personal relationship with God. It is the only way to keep your faith and stay on the path of strong belief in times when your faith is tested by the shortage of free time and lack of understanding from your peers.
During my years of study I have learned to lead a life that allows me to put God first even when being busy. In case you are struggling with similar situation, you will find this article useful.
Journaling & Devotionals
Keeping a journal or devotional is a great way to grow spiritually and keep in touch with God. Make it accessible so that you can write down your thoughts anytime you need it. When we are writing, our focus sharpens and we pay closer attention to our thoughts. It’s a great time that we can spend one on one with God. Don’t try to be too poetic or fancy in your wording, just put on the paper what’s in your heart. One of the greatest things about writing is that when time passes, you can see how God influenced you over the years. It’s so fascinating!
Assign “Jesus Time”
We live a busy life, that’s for sure. Can you find time for praising, prayer, and fellowship with others? Depending on how busy your schedule is, you have to find the time to communicate with Christ on a daily basis. Just like any other relationship, this one takes much time and effort. However, relationships with God are the most satisfying, fulfilling, and important. Here are just a few ways of how you can spend more time with Jesus:
- Engage in Bible study with your friends
- Listen to sermons while you are going to school
- Leave at least 30 minutes a day for prayers
- Join a Christian club
- Read Bible instead of watching Netflix
- Have a weekly Skype call with a dedicated friend to talk about God
- Create a personal blog with Godly thoughts and Bible verses
- Go to the park and silence yourself to listen to worship songs. Just listen!
May all of you sustain yourself in God’s presence and His words!
