Diversity in Health Care Essay
Diversity refers to the condition of having a diverse range of people and communities existing in today’s society. For example, people from different ethnic groups, gender, social-economic status, older and younger people, and disabled peoples. Diversity means being aware that each person is unique and each one of them understands each other and thus embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity that each individual possess.
Cultural competence refers to the ability of a person to interact effectively with people of different cultures. A person having cultural competence has the ability to communicate, understand, and interact with other people across culture. It comprises of four components which includes; being aware of one’s own cultural worldviews and of different cultural practices, your attitude towards cultural differences, and cross-cultural skills.
Diversity management refers to the methodical and planned commitment by an organization to employ and retain employees with diverse backgrounds and abilities. This is a management policy that seeks to identify and value heterogeneity in an organization.
Demographic parameters such as population distribution, size, and composition have impacted on the U.S. health care industry in various ways. These demographic changes will affect the location, type, and magnitude of demand for health services in the United States. The change in demographic trends arises from increasing births, an ageing population, and also due to decline in the number of deaths amongst other factors. These demographic changes have resulted to changes in the quality of services provided to patients. For instance, the outpatient services, the average length of stay in hospitals, and the number of day cases have been escalating constantly. This demands an intensification and reconfiguration in the use of health care facilities and also improvement in the level of efficiency.
Due to the increased number of patients being admitted to hospitals, there has been a need to increase the hospital facilities including infrastructural facilities, which have been, overused by the increased number of people. Also, there has been a need to increase the number of doctors, nurses and subordinate staffs. This has increased the hospitals expenditures, and consequently hospital bills have been increased.
Future trends in the composition, size, and distribution of the population may impact the occurrence of various types of diseases and may also change the location or level of demand for health care services. Among those demographic changes are the shift in the age structure of the population, slowing rate of population and a rapid rate of minority population increase.
Diversity has become very crucial in organizations. This is because the world’s increasing globalization requires interaction among people from diverse beliefs, cultures, and backgrounds. Diversity in health care industries promotes creativity which opens a door to new ideas. Hospital staffs need to learn the skills needed in a multicultural work environment. They have to teach themselves how to value multicultural differences in both customers and associates, so they can treat them with dignity.
Also, some demographic changes such as equal opportunity legislation, organization restructuring and women in the work place need to be considered. This calls for the management to review its management practices by developing new and creative approaches in management. These changes will increase customer services and improve on performance.
