Computer Interaction Essay Sample

My area of interest would be how computers have affected social interaction in teenagers and young adults in America.

Research questions were:

  1. Does computer interaction negatively affect teenagers socially?
  2. And why computer interaction may have a lasting impact on teenagers?

92 youths of which 39 were male and 53 were female. The youths underwent an online communication examination on social networking web pages.

Time spent on computer interaction.

Development of delinquent behaviors.

More males than females developed delinquent behaviors as they spent more time on computer interaction such that they copied other peers’ socially undesirable behaviors over the internet.

64 undergraduate students who previously were not known to one another.

They were placed in 32 pairs and were assigned to a task in conversation either in face to face setting or over the internet chat.

Face-to-face versus online conversation.

Satisfaction, experience and emotional understanding between the partners within a pair.

Face-to-face conversation brought about more satisfaction and individuals experienced a greater degree of self disclosure and closeness with their partner. No differences in the extent of emotional understanding as was seen between these groups

Negative effects of online interaction

The behaviors of individual teenagers. 

It was found that online interactions brought about self-injurious behavior.

25 adolescents who used most of their time in online chatting

Interaction with family members such as assisting in carrying out family tasks

It was found that most adolescents were fond of interacting with their peers online for many hours that they could not get enough time to interact with family members for instance assisting them carry out family tasks.

45 teenagers searching for friends on Facebook.

Time teenagers spend on Facebook interactions.

Interaction of teenagers with teachers and fellow classmates.

It was found that most teenagers spend lots of time on Facebook and therefore do not get enough time to interact with teachers and classmates.
