Bilingual Education Essay Sample

Introduction

In the United States, bilingual education refers to the use of English and the second language for instructional purposes. In the popular use, this bilingual education has become the umbrella term that is applied to various forms of language instruction that includes the diverse combinations of components, subjects, models, goals and even to programs that are monolingual. This extension of the bilingual education’s meaning reflects the ways in which the basic idea of education through two languages has been adapted to meet the requirements of all schools. This paper discusses the various impacts of bilingual education to children or student who are subjected to the program.

Effects of bilingual education

In the United States, the researchers have emphasized on the educational and psychological benefits for the students who are placed in places where they only develop their skills in subjects that are thought in their native languages and also develop knowledge of an additional language. In addition to the easing the transition between two languages without the students loosing the content subjects, bilingual education also makes students to have self esteem and confidence because this education values the students’ previous knowledge by incorporating it into the daily instruction. On the other hand, this education is blamed for the lack of educational opportunities and skills for the minority students. However, the shortfalls are as a result of the socio-economic structures of schools and the entire society. The research literature makes shows that bilingual education has a negative vision in the preserving of the American ethnic identity and erosion of culture (Arizona Department of Education).

The bilingual education has give advantages to many students in the United States of America especially the Spanish speaking preschool children that mitigate negative impacts of poverty on achievements. It is indicated that the bilingual education has assisted in neutralizing the association between the decreased achievement for the child and the mother’s educational attainment. In addition, this education as acted as a very powerful protective which has neutralized the substantial risks alongside the production of comparative achievement rates with the children who receives instructions in English language especially the young Latinos (Tazi, Z).

Various studies have indicated that the consequence of neglecting to implicate the efforts of educating the bilingual children has greatly affected the learning interests of the students which have contributed to the impairment of their academic achievement. In the year 1992, the Collier study revealed that the minority students who have attained proper bilingual education for a period of more than three years have been seen score much higher on academic achievement tests as compared to their monolingual counterparts over a period of time. Teaching another language to children has made them have the capability of learning other languages better if asked to do so. This is because the children have gained a wide capability of learning new things and their brains are very flexible which makes them accept to learn more facts (LAB Working Paper No.1).

Conclusion

Bilingual education has been seen to have many effects and the United States which encourages immigration and welcomes thousands of immigrants from all over the world every year, should give high priority to it. If America accepts immigrants from other countries, it needs to provide the kind of education that best meets the needs the incoming children in order to prepare them for competitive job markets in the country as well as the entire world. All children should be given an opportunity to fair education and therefore America should take the example of other nations that have succeeded in implementing the dual language programs whereby the children are prepared to be bilingual and bi-literate.
